800Mhz Analog Trunking still operating in Sydney

Post by blacktown »

I was quite suprised to find that the 800Mhz Analog Trunking sites are still up and running in Sydney.
I can hear AAP and GPT in the City *
Even Horsley Park came to life with some users a couple of weekends ago at the Equestrian Centre.
Cant hear Stadium Australia Homebush & Airport Hilton sites from my location.

Main customers are Bridgeclimb, Motorola Rental users and Sydney Ports Corp plus a number of smaller users
This is in defiance of competition from TETRA trunking (Motorola), NXDN trunking (Vertel), TRBO trunking (Orion), LTR Trunking (Vertel), UHF and VHF MPT1327 trunking (Vertel & Telstra) ... I think there is even a downsized Smartrunk system still running by Australian Mobile Radio.

Still suspect that this is maybe a long sunset and that the sites will be switched off eventually (the licences expire mid 2014)

Bridgeclimb is boring .... you hear the same thing over and over and over.
As far as I can figure out the climb leader has his own talkgroup allocation with up to a dozen radios receive only radios preset to that talkgroup.
Only the climb leader affiliates on the network

I have been listening to the 800Mhz analog sites in Sydney off and on for the last 10 years
I am suprised that they have persisted as long as they have

I think 500Mhz TRBO trunking will eventually take over ... from the little i can glean from various sources I hear 800Mhz TETRA has penetration problems in certain parts of Sydney due to the multitude of hills and valleys ... TETRA needs a lot more sites but the financials obviously dont warrant the investment

Somebody posted this to the Radio Reference database for AAP 800Mhz
Looks like it came from somebody with a actual radio or from the codeplug
This made sense last year however most of the Bridgeclimb has now migrated back to GPT
Just for reference

Im a bit of a noob when it comes to trunking(Im only 14, mind you! :D ). what is Tetra,Orion and NXDN? are they encrypted of just standard trunking under a special name?
Thanks,
RadioKid

It can get complicated with all the different modes out there, but in basic terms, TETRA and NXDN are both digital modes. Orion is just the name of a network that runs the DMR (I think?) digital mode. All these modes can operate with or without encryption and all can be run as trunked networks. You can't use one mode to communicate with another - so a TETRA radio won't work with a DMR radio ect.

TETRA is 'unscannable' period.

Unencrypted TETRA can be scanned using SDR, but not using any standalone scanners on the market. The software is freely available.

the claim that tetra is "Unscannable" is not correct rather not monitorable via normal means and requires an SDR and Linux, i listen to it here in Brisbane and i know of a few people in sydney who also decode tetra
