Im looking at purchasing my first digital scanner to pick up p25 can anyone recommend a good first scanner

Decide if you want a hand held or a desk top model. HH is better IMO because it will work with batteries and can be carried anywhere. Desktop scanners won't work if there's a power outage in you area.
Your budget will be the factor on a new model with warranty or U can risk a pre-owned on EBay but it's a bit of a gamble. Some on line dealers have BNIB with warranty & free shipping, but stick with Aussie dealers.
Uniden may be you best to start with. The Uniden UBCD-396XT, digital APCO 25 would ideal in most states. It is around $469.
