Central Coast Police

Hey guys I have the Uniden ubcd396xt scanner and put in a few police frequencies I had for the Central Coast and I received some transmissions (not readable ones), Now I know its all encrypted these days but the little ENC logo on the scanner didn't show like for other encrypted channels instead it showed NAC:293, if any body could fill me in what this means as I have no idea???

All Central Coast police radios are "strapped" ie locked into encryption
Bravo covers a large geographical area with varied topography (lots of hills, valleys and the coastal strip).
The channel can be split when required eg new years eve
NAC 293 tells me you are "listening" to Bravo North (Vote 103)
Bravo South uses NAC 430 (vote 42)
Newcastle (Mike) uses NAC 526 (Vote 34)

I have also had similar things happen up in qld (Ipswich) where sometimes you just get the "glitch" noise and a NAC. But occasionally you can hear the actual audio although it's only ever crews, no VKR. I have no idea why this variation occurs...

I think the OP stated he couldn't hear the transmissions. And in NSW there is no option to turn encryption off by the end user.

Although if there is ever a job with crews from two different regions it would be handy to have the option to transmit unencrypted.

In New South Wales It is arranged in zones and channel/position numbers

Zone 1 = Analog
Zone 2 = Encrypted P25 - Greater Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle regions. (164 channels in zone 2)
Zone 3 = P25 Clear - Regional country New South Wales eg November, Oscar, Etc

Officers working in regional country Nsw change zones to access Sydney channels and vice versa

I have heard reference to a zone 4 on november but havent figured it out yet

Last I saw on 'Recruits' when I watched it when it first came out on Ch 10, they used normal call signs eg 'City 15' - has VKG gone to phonetics like most of QLD now?

Currently a number of local area commands are being amalgamated eg city of sydney + the rocks = Sydney City
In the country areas the station name + callsign number is used as a rule because of the distances between different parts of the same local area command

Callsigns are arranged by

1. Local Area Command

2. Regional:
Central Metropolitan
North West Metropolitan
South West metropolitan
Northern
Southern
Western

3. At the state level there are number of specialist commands eg:

State Crime Command
Marine Area Command
Traffic & Highway Patrol Command (uses regional callsigns)
Police Transport Command
Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics
Aviation Support branch (air wing)

Phonetics seem to be used for special events eg new years eve etc

This is sourced from the old NSW Emergency Services Scanning website, which I believe was based largely on in-house documents supplied to the website owner. The source passed away in 2008, so the website more or less stopped at that point (also encryption was introduced in the Sydney metro area in May 2008). The basic callsign structure is still intact in 2014 but there have been some alterations (Highway Patrol and Transits moving from LAC based to their own statewide commands)
