Melbourne MMR Monitoring problem

Post by spectreman »

Hi guys.

I have recently returned from a short visit to Melbourne. Took down my XTS3000 UHF handheld that is set up to monitor the MMR.
I was located in the CBD, 31st floor apartment, just across from the Crown Casino.
My radio has all the MMR CBD simulcast freqs in it, plus a couple of Mt Dandenong freqs.
The radio is set to auto scan all the freqs when I select the MMR zone.
However, when monitoring the MAS, the recovered audio kept cutting out all the time, every few seconds, so I could not follow conversations properly at all, very crap. I cannot believe that I was in a bad signal area. Can anyone shed some light on this problem. Radio programming error ?
Faulty radio ?? The radio does work perfectly in analogue FM mode, had several 70cm contacts with it.

Thanks, Chris. VK3TYG

Hi Phil.
Thanks a lot for offering to help. I will email you my codeplug tonight.
I did have one P25 contact on a P25 70cm repeater near Melb, but I was mobile at the time & the audio was somewhat broken. This is the only P25 contact I have had with the radio so far.
The radio was certainly recieving MMR signals ok, TGID numbers would flash up briefly on the display too, but the recovered audio would last 2 secs, then cut out for 1 sec, and repeat this same pattern the whole time, very annoying. The radio was sitting in the same spot in the CBD apartment. Tried moving to different spots, no better.
My XTS3000 does have pretty old firmware in it too, several versions out of date. However, I cannot upgrade it myself.

Cheers, Chris.

Ok, I have found out that perhaps I had the NAC code set incorrectly for the CBD base stations I was trying to monitor. The radio was set to a NAC of 161, but have been told it should be 295, so have changed this.
Of course, I cannot try it out until I visit Melb again in another month or so.
