yeah I should have mentioned the 2nd shot was at 300mm...but the first shot is only mm from the flower.
Open focus to the right and zoom all the way in, manual to focus then move in and out to focus it in...perfect!

I apologise if this is a silly question. I've been interested in photography for a little while now. What sort of equipment is required to produce images like this?

im using a simple Canon 400D Digital SLR with 70-300mm IS lens and 18-55mm IS lens...easy done

All done with a Nikon D70 (one of the first decent consumer grade DSLRs).
The difference between a good shot and a stunning shot is:
A. Person behind the lens
B. Choice of lens ie: f2.8 beats a f5.6
C. The camera. Yeah yeah, an 18MP is going to better than a 6MP? No.
Now we are getting into a topic this forum doesn't cover ...........
