Plenty of Action or was it?

Post by AIRMAN »

For over 2 hours yesterday we had the Firies and the Auxiliaries and QPS involved in what was termed a large grass fire in the area where I live.

I first got to know about it because of all the sirens going off. Everyone thought it must be a plane crash as we have the airport nearby, then I switched on my AOR8200 and heard the words grass fire, assembly points, control points and the Auxiliaries being brought in from Cambooya and other places. QPS crews were positioned each end of our road and at Greenwattle St.

Only thing was, I couldn't see anything or smell any smoke. Also the wind direction was wrong as it was blowing away from the urban areas.

Today I took a ride up where it was all supposed to be happening and there was NO sign of a burn of any kind.

I think it was an exercise. Anyone else in the Toowoomba area hear any of this? It was in the morning.

Plenty of Action or was it?

Post by Phantom »

Was a large grass fire at the end of tor St.

Quite a large area (20-30 acres) involved.

Took some time to get under control.

Went for a drive but the smoke was thick and didn't want to get too close.

Fireground was VHF 69 but as I am still trying to find out that freq that equates too.

There were 12 appliances in total that were responding or enroute.

According to my records, VHF 69 is 78.1625 MHz, and is a Repeater on Picnic Point.

Thanks BG.

The area was over the hill from where I am and the wind was not blowing from the east as it normally does. That's the reason why I was unable to see any sign of it from my home.

QPS was also involved, but I wasn't exactly sure why. :?:

Do you monitor QFRS continuously or when you hear the sirens?

QPS can be involved for any number of reasons, such as deliberately lit fires, potential traffic hazard of smoke blowing across highways, need for evacuation, or just to keep the sightseers at bay.

And I understand that there have been a couple of grass fires, of suspicious origin, in the Toowoomba area, in recent weeks.

vehicles on scene were
Urban
311A
311L responded from stn 12 to 11 to get 311Y
312A
Aux
312B
317V
Rural
cabalah 51

cambooya 52
cambooya 54
gowrie little plains 51
gowrie mountain 41
gowrie mountain 51
johndaryan 51
wagners flat 41
Senior officers onsite were
WB1
WA1
WR1
WR12
and i belive goombungee 51 was code 40'ed en route
in total there was about 5 to 10 hectares of vegetation burnt out really there was too many resources on scene for the size of fire but due to exposure they wanted to be safer rather than sorry as it had potential if the grass was cured more but as it was fairly green it didnt burn the fastet that i have ever seen but like i said it had potential to get large. i know our motto in our brigade is always hit it as hard and as fast as possible to get it out before it becomes a large incident requiring more than a few hours to extinguish.

Fantastic! I thought you were receiving voice traffic.

Where do I start the learning curve with pagers?
What equipment do I need apart from my AOR8200 and my iMac?

Simple language please as I have no knowledge of this.

Thanks
