Hope this is the right place to ask.
I want to pick up a couple of walkie talkies but I dont really know what to look for or how to compare them.
I have no idea about frequencies, what FRS/GMRS is or anything really.
I just want them for mucking around and for the kids to use so dont need anything to speccy. Would like them to be rechargeable though. Will I find anything locally in the $50 range?
Can you bring them in from overseas? These for example http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MH230R-2 ... Y3RO63O9Y0 Will the voltage difference matter when recharging?
There are a few on Ebay that get sent form Hong Kong. Will they work here?
Thanks everyone.

Re: Help with Walkie Talkies
Welcome to the forums...
I am not sure about overseas CB radios as their CB channel allocation may be different to us in Australia.
Also be careful about those hong kong/chinese radios as many of them do not cover the Australian CB band and are also quite illegal in most if not all circuimstances because it allows front panel programming and transmission on restricted frequencies which can carry a massive fine and jailtime if caught.
For something cheap and child friendly perhaps something from WOW Sight and Sound?
https://shop.1wow.com.au/productcart/pc ... 28p914.htm at $49
or
https://shop.1wow.com.au/productcart/pc ... p14869.htm at $33 but probably more suited to girls (you might be able to get it in other colours )
Just remember channels 5 and 35 are emergency channels. As an emergency monitor I hear a massive amount of inteference on these channels from young children.
Any more questions feel free to ask!!!
EDIT- overlooked the rechargeable bit of the question - I am not too sure you'd be able to get rechargeable ones for under $50...
Try this: https://shop.1wow.com.au/productcart/pc ... 8p2771.htm a bit more expensive at $84 but Uniden are a good brand, good quality and comes with the batteries and recharging station!
Cheers,
youngn

Hi Youngn,
Thanks for your comments.
I found the Motorola I linked at Amazon here as well http://www.dundeedeals.com.au/Motorola_ ... mh230r.htm
Its an Aussie site. You reckon that means it would be fine to use here? Note the price difference between Amazon and here.
Price will come out similar between the Motorola and the Digitalk after I factor in delivery, but Ive been told the yellow ones are more desirable! Of course there is the chance the Motorola doesnt work here, although Amazon are great at taking things back.

Re: Help with Walkie Talkies
I am a bit suspicious about that radio having 22 channels as usually australian CB radios have the full 40 channels (or 38 as many are now advertising due to ch22 and ch23 being data channels).
Plus the fact that it states "11 NOAA weather channels" tells me that it is an american based radio as we don't have those types of channels here.
Comint might be able to shed some light on this as he is the communications genious here on the forums.
For $140 you could pick up a couple of very nice CB handhelds in a local store and know that they will do the job properly...
As for delivery, well I am not sure what that costs for WOW Sight and Sound, I was just assuming you were able to go down to a local store and pick it up but you may be in a different circumstance.
Perhaps eBay Australia might be a good place to look at too?
Cheers,

The Motorola MH230 is an FRS/GMRS radio, and is thus totally unsuitable for use in Australia. The frequencies are in the 462 and 467 MHz range.asdf wrote:I found the Motorola I linked at Amazon here as well http://www.dundeedeals.com.au/Motorola_ ... mh230r.htm

Just because a radio is sold in Australia, does not mean that it is legal to be used in Australia.
Best to leave those ones alone.
America does not have UHF CB, but FRS is Family Radio Service and is something like our UHF CB, but only 500 milliwatts (half a watt). I can't remember what GMRS stands for, but it is a licensed Service, and limited to 5 watts.
