Flashing amber LEDs

Post by Mickyy »

Hi guys,
I was just wondering if anyone new the legalities of having flashing amber led lights on your vehicle on a public road.

The reason for my asking is that I am frequently stopping on the side of the highway at night as i do a lot of driving (whether this be because of a flat tire, to answer a phone, or some other issue). I would like something a bit brighter and more noticeably than my hazard lights, perhaps some led strobes in the boot to be exposed when it's open? Alternatively something on the dash and the parcel shelf?

Thanks guys,
Michael

Hi Michael. When it comes to traffic laws and you have a question, call your local police. They're normally only too happy to answer questions and provide advice :-)

Schedule 1, Part 7, Division 19, Section 104 (4) of the Queensland Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standard and Safety) Regulation 1999, as amended 01 July 2010, says NO flashing lights (other than turn signals).

Ahha, ok...if you go by the letter-of-the-law (as in comint's post) the flashing light can't be ATTACHED to your vehicle.
If you have an array of LED's (regardless of colour) on a frame NEXT to the vehicle then you should be completely legal...?

My question would be, why?
you can see hazard lights for more than a klm at night
if they don't see them they aren't gonna see anything else'
Additional lights may even cause a distraction to other drivers

just make sure you think when you pull over,is it safe, are you clear of the traffic lane with sufficient room for you to exit the vehicle and not be in the traffic lane
and as COMINT has posted, it's also illegal

White lights facing oncoming traffic, under any circumstances, is a BIG no-no.

As for the legality of lights on a frame, don't know. But something like that, or cones or triangles, always seems to attract the morons who like to see if they can get as close as possible without actually hitting the items. Unfortunately, they don't always miss.

Also in QLD it is an offence to have visible amber rotator type lights visible(even when not operating) unless you use those lights for use on the road(traffic control, wide loads and escorts, road works, towing etc.)

What Mickyy was asking is like those moron who use their rear fogs so they can be seen better, but in fact all they do is blind people following and create a bigger hazard, I do a lot of lond distant driving on the long straight stretches west of Toowoomba and I can tell you the standard car lights(tail and indicators) can be seen 5klms away. In fact you can see them until they disappear over the horizon. so there is no need to add extra lights.

As for cones/triangles, the best way to make sure they stay put is to use a lump of 3x3 or larger timber block to hold them in place. Guarantee it stops the clowns from attempting to hit them, and if they do they get a very rude wake up
