Military activity - Buckshot

Post by SteveO »

Heard callsign "Buckshot" on 118.3 this arvo and if the link that red_86 provided is correct it should have been an F-111.

Also heard "Engineer 1" on 121.925 asking for permission to cross the runway.

The F/A-18F Super Hornet is replacing the F111s at 1 SQN.

And Yes, Callsigns are assigned to the Squadron, not the aircraft type.

1SQN = Super Hornet
6SQN = F-111 (...will transition to Super Hornet in 2011)

Both squadrons use a variety of callsigns dependent upon mission type, eg.savage, sabre, buckshot etc. They will also share callsigns too. There are several websites that disclose various RAAF callsigns.

I've also noted a slight increase in milair activity lately that may be attributed to the new jets.

Keep watching the skies; there will be plenty of F-111 flying between now and the venerable old girl's Dec 10 retirement date.

Cool eh! I love listening to how professional the RAAF aircrews are. I too was listening, both on my scanner and as they flew near my home. Was also a 36SQN jet ('Stallion') a little earlier in the evening.

Typically Stallion is linked to either the C130 or C17 - not Fast jet group

Correct! Hence the reason I said 36SQN (which = C-17s) :-)

Don't really need to be that close to Amberley to hear the planes
I live quite some distance but when they are up and doing circuits they will fly above the height of the mountains between here and there so I should be able to hear them with no problem

Had a good day listening to the RAAF

Heard call signs - Rhino, Buckshot 21, Cannon 11, Savage 61, Falcon 81 & 91 which I believe are all super hornets?

X-ray 44 ground crew?
