Well, first you have to make a decision as to what Trunking you want to listen to.VhfRadio wrote:Does anyone know what a good handheld trunking scanner is as i am keen to buy a scanner with trunking on it

Some scanners will only handle Motorola and EDACS, whereas some will handle Motorola, EDACS, and LTR. And a few will also handle APCO25 (NOT encrypted).
There are currently NO radio scanners available that will handle MPT1327 - which is quite prevalent in South East Queensland - or Motorola's Zeon Digital Network (aka TETRA) - which has the Brisbane City Council as a major user.
Also, if you want to monitor any 800 MHz Trunking, be sure the scanner is suitable for Australian conditions, as the American 800 Mhz Band cuts out 1 MHz lower (868.9875 MHz) than the Australian Band (869.9875 MHz).

UBC396T for EDACS, LTR and motorola type 1 and 2, also it does APCO25 un-encrypted.
Or if you want cheaper take a look at the dicksmith DTS-96. http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.store ... View/D1847

As far as Trunking goes, I wouldn't touch the DTS-96 'with a barge pole' unless it was virtually FREE.Finch wrote:UBC396T for EDACS, LTR and motorola type 1 and 2, also it does APCO25 un-encrypted.

The UBC396T is a good scanner, but bear in mind that it has been superseded by the UBC396XT, of which, a version suitable for Australian conditions, is supposed to be released later this year.
