In Melbourne the MMR occupies a large part of the 420Mhz band, so there is a lot of planning that takes place a long time before the race. Be aware that ACMA never publish the F1 allocations - the best you will get is some of the support services eg Simoco etc

Have a listen to the 865-870Mhz band to get familar with the TETRA hum ... its unmistakable

Scan 410-440Mhz particularly when the F1 cars are on the track ... they will be somewhere in between the P25

No luck today. Couldn't see anything in the range with a ~25khz bandwidth at all. Wouldn't we expect to see the carrier/control frequency active regardless if anyone was actually using it at a given time?

Yes I agree.....maybe not on 24/7 but defo in use during the practice/racing.

The freqs I posted earlier im the thread covered TETRA at European races, and assumed they'd be approx right for this race too. I'd suggest searching 380-430 or 440-470mhz.

Interested to know if you or anyone else gets this going and finds any info? Likely that the TETRA carriers will be up and running from Weds onwards, maybe earlier.

Laptop went bonkers and i can not find any tetra stuff on that band only vicpol and AV.

Reviving an old thread, and I know the F1 race is still several weeks away, but if anyone has the TETRA decoder software working in Melbourne, you might be interested to know the F1 TETRA network is confirmed to be unencrypted and can be easily decoded with this software. Typical base transmitters on 425-426Mhz. If anyone wants to try decoding these or wants further please post of PM me direct.

The freqs used for the F1 are five watts, same as the AusOpen DMR.

These systems are only to be accessed from inside site and when no radios are going outside of grounds they only need to do five watts.

Five watts can only be accessed and be decoded from about two km away.

Hi Guys I just registered on here just to ask this.

I want to know what sort of scanner radio I need to buy from ebay to be able to listen sky sports f1 commentary at the 2017 melbourne grand prix this year? and then what do I set the freq etc to. Any info will be hugely appreciated. I am not a radio expert.

I have just read your post so I'll have a go at giving you a suggestion... I would suggest that you look for a scanner suitable to receive DMR transmissions. These scanners unfortunately are not available in Australia and you would need to import one from the US as many of us do. Uniden offer DMR on their BCD436HP/536HP at an additional cost and the upgrade is purchased and installed by the user.

Whistler offer the TRX-1 (handheld) and the TRX-2 (Base/Mobile) DMR and NXDN capable out of the box...
They are not cheap, programming the units is a learning curve and again must be imported from the US (or UK).
Being a TRX-1 owner I can say they do work and work well and Whistler seem to be listening to the consumer with regards to improvements and the like.

There is a lot of info on the internet about these scanners so have a good read and good luck with your search. Hopefully you will find a scanner that suits your specific requirements.

For those interested MSS Security have changed the frequency that they usually use for pre and post event Security operations. The first time that they've done so in years.

They have moved from their 494.150 allocation to their ever reliable and longstanding allocation of 487.325.

The shift supervisor also has a access to F1 GP AGPC radio network which uses the Orion Network before switching to their own closed network on event day.

A quick snapshot of one of the F1 Teams radio setup. All Motorola's (model unknown). Most of the other teams had similar setups. A couple of the other teams radios had labels beside them denoting who was assigned to each unit.
