What is the difference between the PT and HP models?

Sorry about the noobish questions.
Hey Dazz, it’s hard to recommend when we don’t know what you intend on listening too and where you are located.

Many emergency services in Australia are using or moving to P25. All newer digital scanners will do both P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2, but if they are using encryption you are out of luck.

DMR is another digital mode becoming more widespread, especially in cities. Likewise NXDN. These modes are worth considering if you plan on scanning more than emergency services.

The PT models are basically the Australian versions of US HP models. The Australian models don’t do DMR or NDXN, only the US models do. But the US models have a different band plan which cuts out part of our 70MHz and 800 MHz bands, which you may not even notice.

There are other models and even makes out there that offer digital scanning, but again, it depends on what you are after.

So as you can see, there is no easy answer for every person.

The Whistler TRX-1 is sold worldwide and has different band plans, including one for Australia.

My setup is modest but keeps me engaged nonetheless:
Uniden UBCD436
Uniden UBCD536
Icom IC-R30
RTL-SDR dongles, Airspy upconveter (for HF) SDR#
Tecsun PL-880 World Radio

Currently thinking about an Airspy HF+ (SDR) or KiwiSDR setup for dedicated HF monitoring, or maybe both. Alex
