N Adaptor

Post by rothackerben8 »

Hi everyone,

I have recently bought a discone antenna. I need to use this with my scanner which uses a BNC connector. I have the BNC plug sorted, but the antenna is what is called an "N" type of plug. I need a way to use the plug with RG6 coax that I also bought. I have to use RG6 as i bought a 100m roll of it. Any help much appreciated

Cheers

Ben

RG6 is 75ohm coax, you should be using 50ohm coax.

N type connectors are very common and mostly standard for any UHF application.

It doesn't matter if the cable is 75 ohm as the impedance mismatch is so slight that I defy anyone, especially on receive to tell the difference. If you check the pages of Ebay you will find many adapters that will suit the purpose.

Once again cable impedance is a nominal figure.

Okay so ohms is obviously resistance, does that mean there will be more signal loss? I am new to this, so please dont have a go at me

It's a bit more complex than just basic resistance, but basically you want to keep the rated impedence (ohms) for each bit of equipment (radio/feedline/antenna etc) as close as possible to each other to avoid 'mismatches'.

However, just as Railscan has said, the difference between 50 ohm and 75 ohm coax will be pretty much negligible for receive only.

No worries at all! You need one of the following adapters, available on eBay or possibly some Jaycar shops may stock them. Search for "n type f type adapter" about $6 from eBay.

And because you are usuing RG-6 coax, get a F-Type Twist on connector for RG-6.

Also on EBay or from Jaycar or even Bunnings....

That will give you a nice tight connection, and if it's outdoor, highly recommend that you waterproof tape it!!

Impedance, 50 or 75 ohm??? Not important on Recieve.

Hope this Helps!!

Cheers

Okay thanks for the help guys. I might go with comport1's option. I think this will work the best
