Call Signs

Post by brianWE »

Forgive me, for I am old....
But I watched a lot of black and white TV back in the dark ages.....what was the callsign police used in the old Melbourne cop shows?
I recall it was the room number of the police radio unit.

"D14" or similar?
Maybe it wasn't an actual "callsign"....but it was used a lot.

Gotta say the newer TV series are a vast improvement....been watching reruns of "Rush".
Loved it......but found it did stretch credulity, a little.
Those TRG guys had amazing latitude.
And no night shift.

I've been scanning for the last 35 years and I have only ever heard it refereed to as VKC ( D24, the old Russell street comms room I went there a few times in my past careers ) I have heard the odd VKC2 that being a portable VKC mobile communications truck used during searches.

As the poster mentioned above, the call sign was D24 which was abbreviated for Corridor D, Room 24 - it still is given a mention on air amongst the older generation of police officers on rare occasion. D24 is now "decommissioned" for want of a better word, and have now fallen under the control of ESTA and their facilities.

Bit of history on it here:

Here is an old photo of D24 in Melb:
