QPS & QAS Radios

Post by bradbald »

Hi all,

I've had a look on here however the post is old so it might not be up to date. Question is, which radios are the QPS and QAS using now for both analogue regions and the Brisbane/Gold Coast/digital/encrypted areas?

Are they still the GP339 for analogue and the XTS5000 for Brisbane/Gold Coast/digital/encrypted areas?

I've never owned anything more complex than an off-the-shelf Uniden. If I was able to source a GP339 or XTS5000, can they be used just like a standard UHF/CB like a Uniden? Can you program in your own frequencies (if you had them licenced) or others frequencies and 'listen' and not talk?

Thanks.

You can program in your own frequencies if appropriately licenced.

Analogue: you technically can program a GP339 "listen only" by disabling TX in the Motorola CPS software. Legal or not, I don't know.

Digital: the GWN will be encrypted, so no point bothering.

Thanks for that. Yes I fully realise the GWN is encrypted and I have no interest in decrypting it. The big question is, would I be better off getting a GP339 or a XTS3000 or XTS5000? I understand the XTS models can work on both analogue and digital (unencrypted)? And you can program them also as RX only, say for an analogue channel you may wish to monitor?

however there is only 2 known p25 user in Queensland who doesnt use Encryption and that is ARFF (Airport Fire) UHF and Ergon Energy (VHF Trunked), you would be better off buying a DP3600 or DP4600/4800, although not P25 it is still digital that most businesses are upgrading to.
