Slow moving meteors in low earth orbit are known to do this, particularly during early morning hours when they are coming headlong at the earth
The other candidate is the Motorola iridium satellites, reflecting sunlight over a number of seconds- often much brighter than Venus. These events can be predicted.
Suspect it is more likely to be the first one

First time I've ever heard of such a thing (with the exception of Vicpol's helicopter and high powered HID spotlight)

wow same thing has happened to me at a mates house it was creepy as hell. then blue flashing lights in the sky with not a cloud in sight creeped me out for a while
