Stream 'theft'

Post by Scannersplitterguy »

I've been running a Police feed for several months via RR and I use ScannerCast RR Edition V0.13.

Today a work colleague said he could listen to the local police on his mobile phone. I had a listen and thought it 'sounded' like my feed. I proved this by switching my scanner off for a few minutes and sure enough the stream coming from the mobile phone stopped! I am absolutely positive it was my stream because you could hear the beeps my Uniden scanner emits when switched on or off.

I then searched Google for my feed using keywords that related to the name I call it - again, I found my feed coming via another website.
How does this occur? Does RR share the feeds from its members? Or, is there a more sinister reason for this 'feed theft'?
Hope someone can answer this.

Don't you think the RR Forums would be the more appropriate place to ask the question.

Thanks guys, seems data sharing must the accepted norm.
I would have thought that I'd be asked for permission by RR first. It's probably hidden in their T&C's somehere.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to make money from my stream.....:-)

It's probably another way RR are making money to host the streams etc "borowing" or giving rights for the streams to third party apps.

Maybe you can have a voice recording some subliminal message go over the top of the stream scannersplitterguy :P haha

Stream 'theft'

Image

As u can see - this is a screen shot from my iPad which is streaming radio stations.

Used mainly to listen to some radio stations when I am away from home, but after a quick search - it also streams some emergency services.

(not promoting the app or service - just advising those as this is topic relevant)

Hi orangepeel, those stations and aps are exactly the same as I get on my Logitech Squeezebox.
Shane, yes I like the idea of running a voice message at regular intervals on my stream.
LOL - "We interupt this stream to advise our listeners of where donations can be made to keep the stream going".
$$$$$ :-)

I guess when you host it to someone elses servers its not exactly yours anymore, with RR it is free to upload to their server but they obviously sell/rent their feeds to 3rd party applications to make money to run their servers/website etc.

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, rredbeak.
My suggestion to make money wasn't intended to be serious.

Ok, now I understand where you're coming from, rredbeak.
I thought you were telling me off for considering 'çharging' listeners of my stream.
Like I said, its probably in the RR T&C's, so I can live with that.
