Just a Jaycar AR1747 on a 27MHz antenna. Nothing special.

Hey Finch, what mode were you searching in? If you were spinning the dial in AM mode you will only capture broadcast stations.

Utilities in SSB are far more interesting to monitor than AM broadcast stations. Switch to SSB and tune a section of a metre band at a time very slowly. It takes patience.

8867USB is a fairly used link for South East Pacific flights, particularly those between AU and NZ

A lot depends on the type of receiver and the functions it has. Sangean are fairly good, but for a decent HF, here some are some examples at this site:

Hi Airman,
It doesn't have any settings, simply wide or narrow, and you play with the base and treble knobs until you get the best quality. It's only a Jaycar one. It is a bit annoying, I’d like to buy a Deagen one day. I have heard they are good, the only bad thing about it is that its external antenna connector is a 3.5mm jack. Or I’ll buy a good second hand one off someone, but this will do for now.
