Is it still worth buying a scanner?

Post by Homer_ »

Hey everyone, first post!

I live in Newcastle and currently have a Uniden UH8080NB and while I've had it for a couple years and never been able to hear my local police for obvious reasons, up until recently I was able to listen to Maitland / Cessnock. So now it's all quiet. .

I was thinking of purchasing the Uniden 396xt to have something to listen to, which would be my first ever scanner. But I'm concerned I'd be wasting my money. So, what else would I be able to listen to if I made this purchase?

Thanks
dean

Dean,

there are plenty of things to listen to on the NSWGRN

ASNSW
FRNSW
NSWRFS
Hunter Water
RMS NSW

these are just to name a few, just because Police have turned on encryption doesnt mean there still isnt stuff to listen to

Thanks mate for your reply.

I'll do a search of what can be listened to and see what I come up with, as I have no idea what is available to listen to.

Can I assume that your examples given can be listened to by the scanner I'm considering to purchase?

Homer,

Where abouts are you located as there are a few mines in the Hunter who have deployed P25 Trunking, i would also suggest an SDR as there are a few Digital Trunked Networks that may also be of interest as you cant decode them with a normal scanner
