Finished my Icom 208 install, just relocating the antenna to the front numberplate mount...
Made a little right angle bracket up for the head, stuck the radio down low and out of the way, extension speaker next to the seat and mic on the center console, this is installed in my territory.

If it's a whining noise it's your alternator and probably coming into the radio though the power wires. If it's a popping sound it's your car ignition system and most likely being picked up by the antenna.
Noise coming from a car into your radio sometimes can be an easy fix other times seemingly impossible to get rid of.

Try a noise suppressor on the alternator.
Try running the radio from an external source and take the car for a drive and see if it's still there and or dissconnect the antenna and see if the noise is still there. You need to find how the noise is getting into the radio.
I will guess that it will be via the power wires.

Re: My Icom Install in the mobile shack!
i was actually running it on a seperate battery once and the noise was there...so it must be the antenna...ive even tried earthing the antenna and the noise was still there.

Re: My Icom Install in the mobile shack!
ok so try taking the antenna off the mount and leave the coax plugged into the radio and see what happens. Try disconecting the coax all together and see what happens. seeing if it's the antenna and not the coax that's picking up the noise. Also Take the belt off the alternator if possible, start the car and see what happens.
To fix engine/ vehicle noise you first need to know how it's getting to the radio and from where and even then you may not be able to get rid of it.
I had a sitution recently where I could not get rid of igintion noise being picked up by the antenna on the front of a vechicle, the solution move the antenna to the back of the vehicle, problem solved.
Some vehicles will be quite as mouse, some will be terrible.

Re: My Icom Install in the mobile shack!
hi Jeff, this is over 2 years old mate, i dont even have the same car anymore
FYI, antenna at the rear, impossible (wagon), alternator belt impossible (id need a science degree)
The noise is generated from the power, this car had a terrible earth. new car is fine
