886 is a spare for Brisbane region. Maybe the recsue gear was non functional so the pump callsign was changed from rescue pumper (A/B) to pumper (C/D)

No, if rescue gear is non functional the appliance is off the run. The call sign wont get changed. Charlie is simply used because alpha and bravo are taken.

then could be that there were enough staff on shift to man the extra pump. Ie no one on holidays or other leave.

Coghilla was right. Kemp place were running spares and there were no sickies in all of Brisbane for the shift so they made up a crew and manned Charlie. They do the same at 2 Stn but normally man Whisky or Yankee. They had no jobs but had a nice night sleep. They had the same spares rostered there the following night but had sickies to fill in at out-stations.
