Scanner suggestion?

Post by Pantries »

Hi, I was hoping to get a suggestion on a good yet cheap scanner? One that is able to listen to Fire and Rescue in the Sydney Metro? Or Ambulance NSW?

Don't want to listen to Police NSW since I'm assuming it's illegal to listen to that?

Cheers.

Fire and Rescue are on the NSW Government Radio Network (NSWGRN), which is APCO P25, so you would need something like the Uniden UBCD396T, or UBCD396XT, which don't come cheap.

What does Ambulance NSW use?

And why are radio scanners half a grand? Didn't expect them to be that much..

From memory, when the UBCD996T was first released, it had a Recommended Retail Price of $999.00

Why are some cars so expensive ?
It depends on what you want to do with it/listen to? Depends on how desperate you are to listen to it?
You can buy some scanners for under $200 - then some are well over $9000

A quick search shows you can get a new Uniden UBCD396XT delivered for less than $390. I don't think that is too expensive when you consider the technology that is in one of these things, and that this is the only 'new' scanner for sale in Australia that will scan trunked systems and monitor P25.

And it's not 'illegal' to scan the police, just not possible because the use encryption in Sydney and surrounds. You can still listen in to them everywhere else using either a conventional scanner or a P25 scanner, depending on the location.

Ah okay, fair enough.

How does it work, is it fairly easy to listen to ambulance/fire NSW in your area? I live in Sydney metro so I'm not sure how it works.

Programming a digital network can appear daunting at first but there are guides online and plenty of Forum resources, I've yet to pick up a Digital scanner but have been researching them none-the-less, personally the price is the reason I hesitate (harmony in the home) but as my area remains analogue for the moment I can afford to hold off.

Programming Example

For a taste of what you can hear you might want to check out the live internet scanner streams for your area...

Good luck!

How does a desktop radio scanner work?

Will that work the same as the portable ones, like the Uniden UBCD396XT?

I've noticed they're much cheaper.

And if I were to get the UNIDEN UBCD396XT, will that most likely pick up local emergency transmissions?

Oh, didn't realise that. Not familiar with NSWGRN, but interesting stuff. Guess you recommend something like the UBCD396XT then?

The only scanner currently sold is Australia that will scan the NSW GRN is the UBCD396XT, being a handheld model. There is no current model desktop/mobile scanner for sale.

If you are after a desktop model an older UBCD996T was the Australian desktop model that was discontinued some years back. They are harder to come by nowadays buy pop up on auction sites every now and again. The other option is import a US model desktop which will work fine on the GRN but because it they have a slightly different band plan you may find it won't scan some others frequencies, depending in your area. If you don't plan on scanning around those frequencies then there won't be any issues.

Ah okay, that's cleared it up, thanks very much mate.

I might try and find the UBCD996T desktop version then, and if necessary import it. I'll only be listening to the frequencies on the GRN, nothing else has really caught my attention that I'll want to listen to. Guess importing one will also be sort of difficult?

Thanks again mate.

If you are looking at one from the US you will be able to get a new BCD996XT from the US for under $500 delivered, or the latest BCD536HP for under $700 delivered. Not difficult at all buying from over there, just buy on eBay (or a reputable dealer) and pay using PayPal for peace of mind.
