Tx4500 not picking up frequency

Post by oztrucker84 »

Hey,

I had a gme tx4400 in my truck at work, I had gatton, toowoomba,Ipswich etc police channels in the receive only saved channels. But work has replaced the uhf with a tx4500 unit. And now no matter what frequency I put in, I cannot pick anything up at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Sounds like they changed to digital encrypted p25 , so your GME and other radios can not scan them

Tx4500 not picking up frequency

Post by Phantom »

My understanding the freqs are still analogue.
Have you checked all the settings on the radio and 100% sure you entered it correctly?
Check the frequency steps (Narrow/Wide) and make sure you have the correct memory bank selected?

Not sure how to check the frequency steps? Or memory banks lol. Just put the frequencies in as best I can because the gme only allows you to enter 5 numbers. But that was the same as my last radio. But not picking up even static on this one.

Have a read of the manual. It's in there how to set/change/check the frequency steps
It might just be one section to try... Not saying that it will be the magic bullet, but you need to check everything.

What are the frequencies you have tried entering?

Have you checked your antenna and squelch settings?
You will need to re-check everything. The radios maybe same-same but potentially different

Got the frequencies from radioreferences.com.. Squelch doesn't seem to make a difference. The aerial should be fine as it works of ch 40. Not quite sure what the frequency steps means. I looked in manual. And tried a different setting for one channel but still not sure. I'm new to fiddling with uhf's lol

I am still receiving several of the Ipswich, Gatton and Toowoomba police channels at work. They are still in analog mode but
occasionally test in digital. The TX4500 RX channels are defaulted to narrow band however this should not make much difference to the performance of the receiver. I would be double checking the frequencies that are being entered. Also I would suggest getting a GME dealer to dump one of the many police packs into it from the computer. Regards Ian

The QPS have been Narrow Band (12.5 kHz Channel spacing) for quite a few years.

The frequencies listed on Radioreference.com, for those areas, are the current frequencies.

If you are not hearing static/hash, have you checked the squelch settings, along with if you have accidentally set any sub audible tones on the radio....

In other words, if you have set say CTCSS by accident, if the correct tone is not sent, then squelch will not open up and you will hear ... Silence...

Go thru the rig and make sure all settings are as you want them to be?

It works on ch 40 fine, so would that mean those setting are ok phantom? I'm not sure which of those settings are the correct ones to choose. I have work checking out aerial this afternoon as I don't seem to be getting much range. Hopefully that's the problem.

Could I tell you which settings it's on, and you could let me know if they are right?
Thanks again

Just because you can hear ok on Ch40, does not reflect that all the other channels are correct. Most of the time, each channel can be set independently to the next.

If you not getting much range, could be a dodgy connection on the antenna/grounding etc.
