I didnt pay full retail for it. I paid about half the market price for it second hand, got a good deal. Thats the only reason I purchased it.

Do you think QFRS, QAS and regional QPS will go digital?

EVERYONE will go digital, eventually, including non-government users - at least in the VHF/UHF Bands. That is the way of the future, although it could be decades away.

As far as I am aware, Digital on the 996 is APCO25 Trunked only, and does not work with APCO25 on Conventional repeaters, as used by QPS (notwithstanding that QPS are also encrypted).

I don’t personally own a 996 but yes it automatically detects APCO and decodes it.
Heres the topic from Scanning tasmania: "My 996 automatically switches to APCO 25 when it detects it and has no problem hearing them ok on 500.050MHz." Posted by Adam.
Hope this helps.

alinco21 wrote:QAS / QFRS you need to look at the cost and what they would get out of going to digital. So I would think that is quite a few years away.
I don't think QAS / QFRS really have any say in the matter.

In the Department of Emergency Services submission to the CMC Inquiry into Police Radio Communication Access, in 2004, at least a third of the 28 pages was about their intention to have all organisations under their control - QAS, QFRS, SES, etc., - using digital and encrypted communications, as soon as possible (Once they worked out which other State's system they were going to copy).

Obviously, the State's current financial situation is likely to have an adverse affect on these grandiose, and some would say, unwarranted, plans.

Well, going on that information, you could try listening on 500.7750, or 500.8250 MHz, 10K1G1E, at Brisbane Airport (Airport Fire Services).

Department of Emergency Services submission to the CMC Inquiry.

The individual written submissions were posted seperately on the CMC website, at the time of the Inquiry. I can probably upload a copy, here, if required.
