I've considered public libraries and park benches, but there must be more.
If you are using a car, you could try sitting in the car in shopping centre carparks. If you pick the right times/day of the week (like Monday or Tuesday) when there aren't too many customers, and park in remote corners, you usually won't get hassled. You might even get to park in the shade.

And if you are real game, you could even set up in the shopping centre food court. It is not uncommon to see people using laptops in such places nowadays. Just vacate the area before the main mealtime crowds arrive.

Mount Gravatt lookout is pretty good, if your into Aeronautical side of scanning thats pretty loud and clear up there as well.

Looking outwards these are some pictures

In my younger days we use to take the scanner with us cruising of a night time and when something of interest come over we would go for a drive and check it out. We use to get some very unimpressed looks from coppers at times. I guess they wondered how we would show up at all the incidents.

tell me about it, ive had my car searched once by the cops because i was sitting down the road from a shopping center that had just been robbed listenning to my scanner. the robbers were still in the area and the cops thought i had something to do with it.

LOL yep, we were following these guys around one night that where drink driving and listening to the scanner at the same time. It was reported of a loud vehicle driving erradically, the loud vehivle being my old commordore but I certainly wasn't driving erradically. Anyway the cops finally showed drove staight past the other car serving all over the road, pulled us breath tested me and searched my car. I'm standing there calmly telling them that the car in front of me was the one they wanted but it fell on deaf ears.
