Most of the portable radios issued to the QAS on road crews are Motorola GP399. They are UHF and have the QPS, QAS and some SES channels in them as standard. In regional centres where the main QAS coverage crews use a "back to back" system to relay radio transmissions from the portable through a UHF transceiver which in turn rebroadcasts the message on the VHF network. In some regions they have locally purchased VHF portables, but these lack any real punch and are frowned upon by the departmental technical overlords.
