QPS Callsigns

Post by Liam R »

Hello, would someone be able to explain to me how the Queensland Police Service call-signs work? I know that they us 100s and 200s etc. but I was thinking of more how they are given out. Are they given out every shift or are they permanent for that car or something.

In Logan when starting their shift they would log on through the radio with VKR using their police user I.D numbers giving details of officers in the vehicle and then ask saying is L101 available etc and then comms would assign them their callsign for the shift. Not sure if that's how it still is now that its radio silence.

Usually call signs are allocated to a specific vehicle, but occasionally a crew will log on with the incorrect call sign and another crew, attempting to log on with the correct call sign, will to told to choose another. Sometimes, the same vehicle will be used by different departments and will be allocated a call sign applicable to the use at the time. They will log on with their service numbers, or in some areas, they just use the names of the officers in the vehicle. It is not unusual to hear both used in smaller districts.

Calls signs are ...

100 Commissioned Officers
200 Station cars, (In some areas, these numbers are used for district patrol cars as well).
300 Transport vehicles, anything from a paddy wagon to prison buses
400 District Patrol vehicles
500 CIB
600 Scenes of Crime and other scientific police and theoretically water police
700 SERT, Bomb Squad and task forces
800 Beat police and foot patrols
900 Traffic Branch or as it is now known, Road Policing Command

The call signs will also have affixed one or two letters which indicated the district they are from, although in some districts the letters are more than often not used and replaced with the name of the division.

Hope this helps
