VIC - MMR & RMR (RID's & TG's)

Post by Xplorer »

There have been some very active and interesting activity recently on the MMR and RMR networks, and I’m intrigued to know what others have been seeing.

But with few contributing, it seems there is either very little interest, or there are plenty that take everything and offer nothing in return

We all have our secret stash of frequencies and call signs, as well as ID’s for TG, RID, DMR, dPMR, EDAC, LTR, MotoTRBO, TETRA, MPT1327, SyS, and including the order of LCN's; it is rather disappointing when we are on the near edge of seeing services transitioning from the old, to the new, but have only a few contributing.

With the RMR network increasing sites, expanding coverage and testing on an almost daily/weekly basis, the testing and interrogation of MMR with RMR, and the continued tests on MMR, there is a hive of activity occurring.

I'm willing to go fishing by throwing out some of the recent activity logged and see if there are any bites. The more bites, the more info will be posted. That way between all of us, the jigsaw puzzle will become clearer on the who is who and what is what as each service comes slowly online in the near future.

What's the best way to set up a uniden ubcd-396xt to scan and log an rmr site?

There are a few options for you.
I would highly recommend you download trial software versions so you get a feel on how they work, and whether they offer you what you are after.

I paid for and use ProScan, as it suits me for some things I want it to do.
From what I hear, Butel software is also good, but is quite expensive; hence using the trial version to see what suits you.

FreeScan software - fully featured free software
http://www.sixspotsoftware.com/products/freescan

ProScan software - fully featured 30 day trial.
https://www.proscan.org/

Butel software (ARCXT) - full featured trial for a limited time
http://www.butel.nl/products/arcxt/arc_xt.html

I currently have freescan and proscan but just a little unsure how i actually set up the radio to monitor a site? I already have a site frequency and i can listen to VICFIRE but not sure how to monitor any and all traffic on the site?

Using the UBCD396XT,and assuming you already have a local RMR P25 Control Channel in and receive VICFIRE ESTA.

1. Open FreeScan and click on the P25 System you have setup to listen to VICFIRE.
2. Look for "ID Mode" setting and select "ID Search" option.
3. Save and upload the programming to your scanner.
4. Close FreeScan and open ProScan and connect to scanner.
5. Select the relevant Favourites List number to scan the system you just updated.

***ID Search enables the scanner to search for any TGID being used that isn't P25 Phase II.***

As scanner starts receiving transmissions, the "History Logging" and "UID Logging" tabs will start populating.
If you don't, you need to check the "Logging" option in the "Options" menu.
Ensure the bottom five options are ticked. Leave the top two options unticked.

Depending on your location will depend on what TGID's for VICFIRE ESTA Dispatch come up.
Regarding Motorola CSC Consoles/Techs/Telstra/Training... they are very sporadic when they come up.
But we all know the RMR network is expanding and ramping up for other services to come on board very soon, so testing is becoming more frequent.

Using ProScan, you can open and edit the logging text files to suit.
***Copy and paste to/from excel and text files are your bread and butter for any Uniden and Whistler Scanners***

P25 Phase 1 non-encryption: scanner will log both TGID and RID for all transmissions.
P25 Phase 1 encryption: scanner will not log these transmissions unless you hold onto a TGID while the encrypted transmission is occurring. This will log the TGID and the first RID transmission only; all subsequent transmissions will be ignored unless you re-scan and stop it again.
P25 Phase II encrypted and non-encrypted: scanner will not stop or log any transmissions.

As you will be aware, any encrypted signal can not be listened to, but may be able to be logged.

Hope this helps.

Thanks X-Firey.

Not much activity over the Easter weekend, but over the last 2wks have monitored below.

RMR Network:
TGID: 3201 - P25 Phase II Encrypted
TGID: 3402 - P25 Phase II Testing not-encrypted
TGID: 32908 - P25 Phase II Encrypted

MMR Network:
TGID: 1702 - ESTA Police training - P25 Phase I not-encrypted
TGID: 10063 - MFB Training - P25 Phase I not-encrypted
TGID: 20101, 20102 - Possibly IBAC - P25 Phase I Encrypted
TGID: 33702 - Unknown - P25 Phase II Encrypted

I did monitor interesting hits around 11:30am on 29th March 2018 from Kinglake RMR site that has me intrigued.
They were TGID's that were I-calls, something I have not seen before on the MMR or RMR networks.

I'm wondering if anyone else has previously monitored TGID I-calls or can shed some light.

I have only come across I-Calls recently on both the MMR and RMR.
I-Calls are quite common on the Orion DMR network for example.
The I-Calls on the MMR network that I have monitored so far involve techs testing new P25 Phase II non encrypted talkgroups .

There has been a fair bit of testing taking place on the MMR over the last couple of days.
TG:32908 P25 Phase II non encrypted. Mobile teams out testing yesterday in Melbourne's west.

The same talkgroup appeared today testing on the Kinglake RMR site.
This evening Sunbury SES are conducting radio tests on TG:32906. (P25 Phase II non encrypted).
Test was only being received of the Pretty Sally RMR site.

We now know the user of these TGs so keep an eye and ear open for more to come.

For info have been monitoring these sites and talkgroups on a BCD996P2.
