Let me get this right, you want to use a HF antenna as a UHF antenna?

10-4 there good buddyPhantom wrote:Let me get this right, you want to use a HF antenna as a UHF antenna?
I would have to use a SWR meter, but that's not a problem

Why would you want to use a HF antenna for UHF?
If it is for RX, any wire would be ok
Ideally match the wire to the length of the wavelength you are wanting.
Still have no idea why you would want to venture down this path...

You can't fit a square peg in a round hole.

Re: HF Antenna as UHF Radio antenna - is it possible ?
Well it is a simple enough question, it either can be done or can't be done.
I am not sure of the inner workings of a HF Antenna :
has it got wiring inside ?
or is it all just lengths of aluminum tubes ?
But I may just go with a wired antenna.
I would rather an older type of UHF Antenna that I had, which was a 30 foot aluminum, but I can't find one anywhere and they don't seem to be made anymore, which is a shame as they were the best.

Re: HF Antenna as UHF Radio antenna - is it possible ?
Well, it's not a simple question
You have not provided any Information
Are you wanting to RX or TX/RX with it?
What are you wanting to achieve?
May I suggest you go back and read up on the frequency/wavelength relationship and this may help your inner detective
As for HF antenna, it depends on the size, frequency, intention, direction just to name a few, as to what it is made out of. If you want to provide more information, I am sure there are plenty of us on here that will be able to help you. We can't read minds, we need a little help from the person asking the questions.

Yes RX/TX.
I would have to use it with a SWR Meter I would imagine.

Can you tell me what you think a SWR would do to help this install?

Re: HF Antenna as UHF Radio antenna - is it possible ?
Why not get an antenna that is designed for use on the band it is made for?
What are you trying time if you are wanting to TX on it. You might be better hooking up a coat hanger to the back of it, as it would give you better results than this antenna. If you want to RX, basically any antenna will work - again better results when you have a MATCHED setup
You might want to go back and read up on frequency/wavelength relationship
My word of advice, get an antenna that MATCHES the use you want and need.
You still have not told us what you are wanting to achieve in this exercise....

Using a HF Antenna on a UHF is a very bad idea

Re: HF Antenna as UHF Radio antenna - is it possible ?
Given you can get an antenna designed for UHF for very little cost I cannot see any rational reason for "trying" to alter a HF for use as a UHF antenna.
Going back to the orginal question. It "may" be possible to modify the HF antenna to work on UHF depending on the design of the HF antenna.
Using Google will give you an understanding of what you need to do to make it work if it can. However I am still wondering why you'd want to!!!
