I heard Brisbane Centre advising inbound flights when I switched on the T9 about 0500hrs today.

Volcanic dust can and does do damage and engine failure. Would this sort of dust present a problem to engines?

Yeah, volcanic ash is very bad for airliners, it doesnt show on radar, and cant be seen at night.

The ash/dust creates a light effect on the cabin window because of the high speeds of the jet. It's a phenomenon known as St Elmo's Fire.

This happened on a flight from London to Aukland about 27 years ago, all engines failed and could not be restarted, however, when the plane came out of the cloud, the engines were restarted. Upon landing, the crew had noticed that their plane had been Sandblasted (couldnt see through windows and hardly any paint remaining)

Passengers who had a view out of the aircraft windows noted that the engines were unusually bright with the light shining forward through the fan blades and producing a stroboscopic effect.

It hit all of the east coast from Perisher north.

Been down at Perisher for a week and the snow was red from all the dust.

Yeah it was predicted another one was coming through last night.

Reason I didn't wash my car when I got home yesterday morning :)
