QPS - Mount isa - Units but no VKR

Post by Streetholden »

Hey guys,

Its been a long time since ive been here and played with a scanner. Ive been sitting here tonight scanning through to see what i could pick up. Ive stumbled upon a QPS channel that only hears the units, no VKR. The channel is 154.755. Jumped onto the ACMA site to check and mount isa QPS is 154.775 TX and 150.175 RX.

Ive also jumped onto the 468.475 and 468.675 and cant hear the units or VKR.

Seems rather interesting to me, but still new. What are your thoughts?

You need to have a better look at the ACMA Database.

154.775 TX and 150.175 RX are actually Links between Mt Isa and Mary Kathleen.

You need to check out the 413.76875 and 414.38125 MHz Links.

Ive been on those channels before. Still dont hear anything either. Being just around the corner from the cop shop its odd that i only pick up chatter on the one channel.

It sounds like you are listening to the link frequencies. To hear both sides, you need to listen between around 467MHz and 469.5 MHz. Have a look at the frequencies on this site.

Ive check the frequencies from this site and many others. Ive been scanning again tonight and may have found one.
469.3450
Seems im getting both sides so far. But seems awfully quiet for a saturday night out here.

Edit, only hearing half again. This time mainly VKR and some units.

When I said "check out the 413.76875 and 414.38125 MHz Links" I meant for you to check out the other end of those Links - namely Four Mile Hill, ACMA Site ID: 20209. There are a number of frequencies there that may be of interest.

If you check the list of frequencies on this forum, you will see that 468.3450 MHz is not a valid frequency. Check Dump Hill (20230).

Thats the weirdest thing. Ive gone through all those frequencies, yet i only get chatter from 469.345, Nothing else from anything else.

413.76875 and 414.38125 MHz are low powered, very directional, link frequencies. They connect the police station to the various operational repeaters. You will only hear them if you are in a direct line, or near enough to direct, between the police station and the repeater. As I have said previously, the police operational frequencies are in the 467 to 469.5 area of the band. If you want to listen to them, then 469.345 is the frequency to do it on. If you can hear the link frequencies you will only hear one side of the same thing you'll her on 469.375. The police use their mobile phones a lot these days and this, coupled with the use of iPads means that the amount of traffic has decreased compared to the past.

You will find the actual Frequency is 469.350 (not .345) (CH 122) or possibly now the new HGS Channel of CH 148. Most likey the HGS because of the 10mhz Split, and date of 23 March 2017. Located at Dump Hill in Mount Isa.

Like you said, you will here both VKR & Patrol Units but then sometimes VKR only. There is a chance that Mount Isa might have another District Channel that's not patched into the "CBD" or "Local" channel as such, so often they are talking on that "Other District" channel while transmitting on the local channel. This is not intentional, they just sometimes don't flick the switch off on their comms console.

Hope this makes sense.

Agreed, and whilst you're looking at the ACMA site, make sure you put distance in.
