Hi Newbie here - 1st time scanner owner

Post by Stratt69 »

Hi All , I'm a virgin scanner owner and live in rural Vic. I just got a Uniden UBCD396XT for xmas, I used to listen to emergency services through broadcastify but decided it was time to get a handheld scanner. I have managed to get the local police channel going - but OMG the manual is confusing the crap out of me.

Really? He's welcoming the guy to the forum, kindness and courtesy are the value of the post.

@OP, get yourself a USB to serial adapter to connect the scanner to your computer (if it doesn't have one) and download the free app for your computer called "freescan" that way you can program easier and faster

The 396 "should" connect directly with the USB port on your PC. Probably no need to have a converter?
It's a lot easier to read/write the scanner via the computer rather than enter via the keypad on the scanner.

Browse the ACMA frequency register and find some frequencies that are of interest to you in the area you are in. Grab the receive frequency and enter it via the computer (assuming you have it running?)

As for the more technical trunking type systems, there are plenty of people on here that have a lot more experience with the systems down in Vic - I am sure they would be more than happy to assist.

We've all been there with the feeling of being "Overwhelmed" but once you make a start, you will be surprised how you pick things up.
