EAS paging abbreviation

Post by Boort8720 »

Hi All,

I was just wondering whether anyone knows what the paging pneumonics 'AFIB, OFIB, TFIB and ONEF' may mean. I believe there are others similar to these, but I cannot seem to figure out what they mean or what agency they are assigned to. From memory, some of the fires appeared to be either in, or in close proximity to crown/bushland. This gives me the impression it may be DELWP?? But iv'e never seen any project firefighters with pagers. Anyone who could shed some light? Any help is very much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

First three may possibly be Industrial / Plantation Brigades. Not sure about the fourth.

FIB stands for Forestry Industry Brigade (see http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/forest- ... antations/ for more info).

I have also seen AFIB, OFIB, TFIB and ONEF in the pager list but they all seem to over in SW Vic so could be specific FIBs in that area. Over my way (NE Vic) Hancock Plantations run most of the plantations and their pneumonics are HANx where x indicates the plantation location.

Hope this helps Boort, good luck with the search

Having cross examined pages, areas, and brigade locations, I agree with what the other blokes are saying; that the abbreviations you put forward are referencing various FiB units (Forestry Industry Brigades) and plantations. Specifically plantations.

Let's examine an example below:

A pager message referencing a couple of the units you mentioned (address redacted):
@@ALERT F180107145 POOL1 G&SC1 SMOKE SIGHTING CNR RYANS RD/FERGUSONS RD POWERS CREEK SVSW 345 D14 (162839) AFIB CPOOL OFIB ONEF TFIB
I would suggest that some of those abbreviations are not for a response or turn-out, but simply a notification that there is a fire in the vicinity of one of their plantations.

Now, the incident addresses was here: http://bit.ly/2EEiCzE

Now, lets look at surrounding brigades:

Image

The brigades initially paged were:

AFIB, CPOOL, OFIB, ONEF, TFIB.

Now, CPOOL, is obviously Poolaijelo CFA Brigade, so that leaves AFIB, OFIB, TFIB and ONEF.

Why don't you start by making a list of all the surrounding plantations and FiBs, then do a bit go digging around who owns them and see if any names match up :D

I do personally know exactly what each of those abbreviations mean and are referencing, but you know the old saying:
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
I'm trying to equip you to figure this out for yourself in future.

Why not try also looking into other seemingly commercial plantations around that incident, and do some digging on them.

I'll throw out some other pager messages below that may help with areas and the like (again, addresses removed). :D

If you get really stuck or can't make appreciable headway, PM me an I'll fill you in. :)

Cheers mate, and have fun with the new project.

P.S. Pneumonics???? Are you talking about mnemonics? Or the generally four letter abbreviations or initials that reference a brigade?

Thanks for that Blake, it never really occurred to me that what I was looking for was in fact right under my nose. Thanks again for that

Hi all,

I have noticed some new paging abbreviations on the CFA/SES EAS Channel 1 network. The message format is similar to that of the ARFF pager messages, however the abbreviations at the end are all different to anything I have seen before. Some of the abbreviations include ADIX, BPIC, BROO, CMOR, CSHQ, GARN, GGAN, MMCG and THOB. A shortened example (to protect privacy) is @@ALERT SF 1A HOUSE FIRE ADDRESS HERE F180808281 GGAN TO ATTEND Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Those four letter abbreviations are the Commanders or whatever the CFA equivalent is.

They take four letters from the Officers name to make what you're seeing, required for CAD and such.

Thanks Pumper50,

I have never seen this before, so perhaps the CFA are now sending commanders, some form of officers or something similar to these incidents? Perhaps it is another move towards becoming FRV? I am not sure, but thanks again for your help.
