EAS (148.9125) is POCSAG?

Post by wesky »

Howdy!

Well, I'm now successful at decoding POCSAG on 148.6375 (Orange paging) in the Melbourne area and am now very familiar with the sound of POCSAG.

However, When i tune to 148.9125 - (Victoria's EAS), the tone sounds a lot different [lasts longer, not as pronounced and not as many bleeps] and PDW refuses to decode, or even acknowledge the tone in POCSAG mode. The tone, through the scanner, is as clear as 148.6375.

Being a newbie, I'm not so smart on these things. Is Victrorias EAS decodable in PDW? Has anyone else in Victoria successfully decoded EAS on 148.9125? Will it just be a case of adjusting PDW's settings like I had for 148.6375?

Cheers,

Steve.

Don't know what EAS uses, but there is another Pager format common in Australia, called FLEX, which is used by the Emergency Services in SA, for one, so it may be that.

are you sure it's eas or do you mean aes?
I'm thinking that Comint is right and you are listening to a flex signal
flex used to be used for sending financial market reports, dunno if it still does

Thanks Guys!

I've tried FLEX and POCSAG (combined in PDW) and just FLEX on its own and PDW gives no love. I'll keep plugging away :)

Wesky - What you are wanting to do is possible in PDW. You're on the right path.

You doing it via the sound card?
Fiddly is the key word.

Also check the baud rate options.

Cheers Pumper.

Yeah, I have 148.6375 working just fine. I'm guessing I'm going to have to fiddle with the laptop to get EAS working...or get another laptop and split the audio from the disc. tap hehehe.

It's really strange... I'm hearing the tones on EAS, but in PDW, the needle in the top right hand corner doesn't swing to the right at all (only moves a very small amount acknowledging that there is some sound coming from the scanners discriminators tap). I've tried all of the different settings, and I just can't seem to get the needle to move or anything to show in PDW. Is there anyone who can start me off with some settings that work for them?

NOT recommended.

Splitting the audio will effectively halve the audio level feeding each laptop, so you will probably be worse off.

or you could try this RS-232 interface, although it is a bit pricey.

Hello guys,
I am new to PDW as well as scanning. I was just wondering how to get my BCD396XT working with PDW. I have been told that an AUX cable out of the scanner's headphone jack into a headphone jack on a computer will do the trick. I am trying to decode POCSAG through the soundcard but I don't know the frequency to use. I live in CFA district 20 in the northern country ban district. Our local brigade in Boort use Unication Alpha Legend pagers. If anyone can help me get up and running I would be very grateful. I probably haven't explained everything properly, so if you need any other info just ask me. :)

Thanks in advance, Mitch

Thank you very much. I have tried that but didn't seem to get the signal strength needle to move past 20%. Perhaps I need to fiddle with some settings a bit more.

Make sure you have the line in or mic input, whatever one you end up using on your pc, volume all the way up. Then you will need to adjust the volume of your scanner. Have a play there and you should start to see messages come through

Setting up POCSAG has been well explained on the forum. I suggest you go and search the forum and all will be revealed.

If you are serious about decoding pager messages, I suggest you fit a disc tap to your scanner to provide reliable decoding capability without too much hassle.
