PDW to Webpage

Ive searched already - cant seem to find it - but find anything ... anyway ...

I am looking at setting up a computer out in the shed (for another radio reason) that will be linked to the internet. This computer will be mostly unattended and whilst it is being used for another reason, I thought that i might put it to some use and set up a pager decoder for the region - that will broadcast onto a webpage, the actual pager messages.

Depending on my ISP, I am hoping to host it locally or via the ISP's webserver.

I was wondering about the legalities of this - broadcasting the pager messages (selected ones - capcode dependant) onto the WWW.

I recall someone (BG maybe) having some issues about this - but i cant for the life of me find the reference to this and what outcome there was. I think it was removed from the WWW for some reason...?

Any feedback regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

It is in planning at the moment - especially for the other use of the computer - however i thought that since it will be setup out there, might as well put it to good use for the wider community.

I know BG took it down as a precaution as he didn't want any legal issues to arrive (after already having legal trouble in the past).

He also had it pass worded protected so only selected people could see it.

I am writing to advise that the Privacy Commissioner has decided to conduct an own motion investigation under section 40(2) of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Act) into the website http://cabscan.bounceme.net/. The aim in conducting this investigation is to establish if http://cabscan.bounceme.net/’s practices are consistent with the Act.

I then shut down cabscan, and all future sites were passworded.

Just to clarify this topic I have worked with a person located in Melbourne who had set up their own system much the same as this who was curious as to the legality of it. After having spoken to ACMA, Privacy Commissioner, Department of Justice, and the communications divisions for the various emergency services, as well as ESTA who operate the victorian EAS paging network I was provided with the following clarification on the governments position on this practice.

While it is legal to scan wireless voice and data systems with the exception of the mobile phone network and encrypted wireless networks it is not legal to rebroadcast or publish the information collected from such a scan. In this respect it is legal for someone to setup a PDW scanner at home to scan the EAS paging network and log down every single pager message sent out but it is not legal to then publish those messages online, no matter what form of obfuscation where to be used. Password protection was not clarified by any of them, their position being no online publication but they chose not to advise if password protected pages where still considered published or not.

Hope this helps for people looking at doing this sort of thing in the future.
