Tonight I heard 501T on the Gold Coast (loud and clear)

Post by BradT87 » Fri Sep 24, 2010 12:24 am

Okay this is weird; I'm at home (central Gold Coast) and what I have as Fireground Channel 7 (465.7250) is coming in loud and very clear with 503A and 501T talking to Firecomm Brisbane. Not a joke.

Talking about an RTC in a tunnel. Giving sit-reps about extricating passengers and what QAS are up to etc.

I can only hear one side of the conversation: I can't hear Firecomm.

*No location given but at a guess, it sounds like a big incident, possibly Clem7, maybe a repeater on 501T or the tunnel itself has a massive output. I can't usually get Firecomm Bris at home.

@1212
Sit-rep from 503A.
Applainces in tunnel are:
503A 504A
502A is at crosspatch 28/29 conducting carbonmonoxide sampling.

I believe 501A and 501T are there.

More to follow.

As far as I know, Channel 7 is a Simplex frequency.
Channel 8 is the Repeater channel using 465.7250 / 456.2250

But whichever way, it is certainly strange.

Yes thats a simplex channel. It had me stumped when Brad rang me (and we were hoping you would be able to tell us Comint)

Brisbanescan told me earlier that they were conducting an excercise in the Clem7 tunnel, if that might be related? :?:

There are fixed ch 5 and ch8 fireground repeaters on a building at the coast, these aren't linked to any other systems in any way are they?

The weather conditions were not conducive to ducting.

but even then the distance we are talking is very large coming from within the clem 7 tunnel where there is little to no coverage from the outside world

The ACMA has what they call a "notional service area radius" of 40 km. And, in general terms, that is the distance from a Base Transmitter that a User can expect to get a reliable signal, and that is with a Base Station effective antenna height of 200 metres above surrounding terrain.

Obviously, such circumstances don't exist in this situation (with 501T, or the Clem7), and even if the Transmitter was on Mt Coot-tha, it would be quite a haul to the Gold Coast.

just on a side issue of 501T.
I was lucky enough to have a full tour of the appliance (it was operational) during a visit to Gatton about 2 months ago for an officers' forum. What a macine - Its the flagship of QFRS at the moment and to date has cost near 3 million.

Yes it can operate as a mobile repeater, but it does a hell of a lot more too.
full video conferencing, a complete firecom operators console. a large plasma screen on the outside of the truck for briefings. Satelite uplink, 2 cameras on 12m telescopic poles (one of which is the same as on an apache helecopter).
Thats just to start with.

The onboard generator can run both itself and 850O at full load and still be capable of more.
at the moment it can only be housed at 1 station or 18 station as it needs 3 phase power at all times to operate the IT rack and air conditioners. But if there is a problem in the system anywhere it will automatically send emails to designated people to "help me"

I wish i had my camera with me that day!

They have to be careful as to where they point the cameras as they can zoom in a long way and one of them does infra-red. so they cant set the thing up in the city and look into the appartments :D
Apparently anyone in the service with access (ie Commissioner) can remotely access the cameras, and other systems on the appliance.

The duty SO told us that it was parked near the story bridge for a demonstration and the cameras were being controlled by QFRS personnel in Melbourne who were conducting a capabillity demonstration.

Yeah it is, according to the SO of the appliance that it needs the 3 phase for the air conditioners for the IT racks and 1 station and 18 station are the only ones with 3 phase power to plug the truck into.

could be to keep the engines warmed as well, most ARFF trucks are 3 phase power.
