Good Antenna For The Car

Post by jaskel »

Im looking for a good all round antenna to use on my car with my 996 scanner... I want to keep it under 1 mtr if possible

How about a triband ham antenna?? or will a dedicated scanner antenna be better??

At the moment I use a 7500 SS 6.5db unit for my icom....does an ok job..is there better?

Cheers

Jas

I would go for a dual band 144/440mhz and they aren't very long

You may not believe this but try it and see.......take a 3 inch coax from feed socket on the back of the scanner, and run a wire from the dialectric to the chassis. Run the braid to the battery via wire or into another earth line back to the battery...DO NOT CONNECT IT TO CHASSIS EARTH. Mount a wire on the highest point you can find, on BOTH sides of your car..be it boot lip. or roof gutter, but make them the same height, 3 inches or so is best. Solder a 4 foot length of co-ax onto the CENTRE dialectric of the feed line and attach the braid ONLY to the chassis of the car....

Your car is now an antenna....bigger the car BIGGER the gain...

My commodore wagon is about 11 Db in gain.......and NO-ONE knows im even listening

This manufacturer has a good range of mobile antennas. This one is great for UHF/VHF scanning:

RFI make decent and small sized antenna's which are perfect for scanning ! I have a few of their CD51 Antenna's and can't fault them.
