Beaudesert-based truck driver charged for using radar detect

Don't have a radar detector...

Beaudesert-based truck driver charged for using radar detector on Bruce Highway at Kennedy, north of Cardwell

Police from Innisfail’s traffic unit nabbed the 57-year-old man who was driving the prime mover on the Bruce Highway at Kennedy, north of Cardwell, at 8.15pm.

A QPS spokeswoman said police vehicles could detect when radar detectors were being used.

"It’s illegal to use them in Australia and it’s probable that they would have been bought from overseas,’’ she said.

"It’s basically an instrument that people leave in their vehicles that picks up when there’s a police car or a police speed radar nearby.’’

She said the radar detectors looked like a small black box, similar to a set-top box, and would scan to find police radars in the area.

"This man would have had it switched on in order for police to have detected it,’’ she said.

The truckie was charged with being in possession of the radar detector.

He’s due to appear in Tully Magistrates Court on December 15.

The statement is so wrong, it's not illegal to use them Australia wide still legal in WA and you can buy them in Australia. You can also buy ones that are 'undetectable' for use in other states and these companies have been around for years. The thing is it's illegal to use one / be caught using one but not illegal to buy or own one.

Good luck to the guy though he's going to get a massive fine.

They are illegal to use in a moving vehicle (as stated by the traffic laws in) SA,[6] NSW, ACT and Victoria as well as NT, Queensland and Tasmania.[7] Heavy fines apply, ranging from $200 – $1200 AUD, up to 9 demerit points, and confiscation of the Radar Detector. However, importing a unit is permitted under Australian customs regulations. Queensland = up to 40 penalty units (approximately equal to $3000) for being in or on a vehicle whether or not the device is operating or in working order.
