What is the frequency range on a car aerial ? can these be TX aswell as RX ?

A car antenna is just a length of wire and not neccessarily tuned perfect. I highly doubt that it can be TX'd on.

A car antenna has to receive the AM band of 516KHz - 1620KHz (or 0.5 - 1.6 MHz).
FM is 88 - 108 MHz....here endeth the lesson, which you already knew

Most car antennas are not a 'standard' length. In most cases they are simply designed to match the looks of the car.
Length vs frequency is a secondary factor. Most drivers will live close enough to AM/FM radio stations to overcome the inefficiencies of the antenna on their car.

So how does my splitter work on a HUGE range of frequencies?

The antenna on the car will resonate well at different frequencies, and not so well on others.
Take for example, the antenna on my Hyundai Getz. It's a thin steel whip about 45cm long mounted on the roof.
It works extremely well on the VHF aviation band (just above FM radio), very well on UHF (especially 400-480MHz) and very well on the 30MHz cordless phone band.
Any other bands in between I haven't really bothered to test. Afterall, when in the car I am really only interested in VHF or UHF. Most car antennas will resonate quite well at these frequencies, even though they weren't originally intended to!

If you've kept up with me so far, you would have noticed that the splitter has a lower limit of 5MHz.....
But your car radio can receive AM all the way down to 0.5MHz....oh no!
Yes, the splitter will attenuate AM stations a little, but in practice I have found the signal level hardly changes unless you are far, far away from the AM transmitter. Most Australian commercial AM stations pump out so much RF power that the sheer level finds it way through the splitter.

Lastly, NO, you can't transmit through these splitters.
If you do, you will end up with one ex-car radio in a few seconds

I have been using one of Davids splitters for about a week now (one antenna,two scanners) and I am very impressed with its operation.
The scanners are a Pro 2005 (Airband) and UBCD396XT (NSW GRN).
The airband signals are still as strong as when the Pro 2005 was the only scanner connected to the Discone antenna.
My GRN reception is greatly improved with the external antenna and I have no problems monitoring Sydney, Central Coast and Newcastle.

This is a great product from a helpful supplier!
