Airband freqs for Innisfail after cyclone

Post by BlueMurder »

Hey guys. I live next to the airport at Innisfail, and as you can imagine at the moment there is a fair bit of air traffic going on with the cyclone recovery effort. Mostly helicopters full of TV crews but the Premiers plane has flown in a few times lately and the odd RAAF Hercules comes in also.
What i'm chasing off anybody who can help is some basic frequencies to tune into.
Thanks guys

Seems it is an 'uncontrolled' airport, so no Control Tower.

Try
CTAF 126.7 MHz
Brisbane Centre - 124.6 MHz in Circuit Area.

CTAF = Common Traffic Advisory Frequency

Although I can't see the details properly, my guess is that it is the NDB on 212 kHz. The transmitter is in the box at the base of the vertical.

And it is NOT a dipole, but a capacitive loaded vertical, with the top horizontal part providing capacitive loading to the vertical antenna, allowing for a shorter antenna. Otherwise the vertical would have to be about 354 metres.

NDBs (non-directional beacons) need to be omni-directional (360 degrees), whereas dipoles tend to be directional at right angles to the dipole.

It is a centre fed dipole. Out of curiosity a while back i did a search on the site details and it is registered to Queensland police service and is listed as HF coastal station and the freqs listed to it include HF freqs for police and queensland transport i believe. I should have said before that i knew what it was.

The NDB site is over the other side of the paddock and does look very similar. It however has a much larger shed attached to it. Been there longer than the coastal station.

Below is ACMA link for site
http://web.acma.gov.au/pls/radcom/site_ ... E_ID=21404

When the weather clears up i'll get some better photos of it.

In relation to the OP i think traffic control may be run out of cairns so if anybody has details on that it would be good. I have had traffic on the two freqs Comint gave earlier but seem to be brisbane area only.

Interesting. Some of the Police frequencies have been licensed since 1976.

Google for ERSA Air Services Australia.

ERSA = EnRoute Supplement Australia, which lists details for most of the airports in Australia. You can download the 6 pages for Cairns.

CTAF should be Local Traffic.

Cairns will not provide control for that area.

The airport is uncontrolled (by air traffic controllers) - basically the pilots arrange their own traffic separation. If there is any information to be passed on - it would be done by Brisbane centre.

Interesting to see the DoD setup TRAs around these areas.

Was a similar setup when the floods were on in RK (except ASA controlled the tower). There was a TRA around RK aswell

Goes to show it proves to read the NOTAMs!!!

I suppose class D procedures are better than CTAF.
