5643,8867,13261 are the HF freqs typically used here in the Eastern Parts of Australia.

Depending on the conditions, you may not only hear some aircraft reporting in with Australian ATC, however there are Nadi, San Fran, Auckland ATC that are present on these freqs as well

I can't set up anything permanent as yet but, is a log wire directional?

Is it better to have the wire in a north/south direction or east/west? If the HF signal is coming from the east as in the Pacific, which way round should the wire be, wire towards or wire across?

Hope this makes sense.

Actually, it depends on how long the Long Wire is. If it is less than a couple of wavelengths long, it is directional off the sides, like a dipole. However, if it is many multiples of wavelengths long, it is directional off the end.

Lets just say that Australian HF operators talk about the "Short Path to Europe" and the "Long Path to Europe".

The longer the better, and as high as possible.
At least 8 metres is a good starting length.
