Have been tuning around the bands this arvo and am picking up some good HF aero Comms.

10.051 MHz VOLMET (New York Radio)
5.505 Mhz VOLMET (Shannon Radio - Ireland)
8.867 Mhz COMMS San Fransisco Radio, Auckland Radio, Nandi Radio (Fiji)
11.175 Mhz USAF "Skyking" (all stations) broadcasts
10.212 Mhz RAAF "Australia Control" talking to an "Aussie" aircraft
Cheers

Sure is - All HF bands are "opening up" and are only going to be getting better

The sunspot cycle is heading out of the dip and on the improve - so all things HF are going to be very exciting in the next few years ....

I was talking to stations in the canary islands and scotland with only 5w....

Will be interesting times in the coming months .....

All Aviation is USB

Typically - most Ham below 10MHz is LSB and abover 10MHz is USB

In SE QLD - you will find aviation activity on
6610, 8831, 8867, 13261 (all USB)

Since Xmas - i have finally got around to getting my ATU hooked up to the 706MkIIG and after sitting on the shelf for months and months unopened - it is working like a gem ....

They are great when setup well (nice ground makes a huge difference)

I might look for a complete 27mhz mobile setup minus radio
I reckon it would work ok on the Kenwood for rxing, I am itching to fire up the HF again

Thanks for the great info, Geoffro.
I've keyed some of those freq's into my trusty old FRG-8800.

Am listening to 10056KHz....sounds like Indonesians having a chinwag.

Hey this is great news, especially about the sunspot activity.

I am hoping to get a budget level (less than $200) SW radio soon. (Must have SSB)

Anyone got any recommendations?

Not sure about a cheaper radio, but for the antenna system, I just use a 27mhz vertical Stationmaster antenna (no tuner) and I get pretty good results for HF receive. Have a listen www.moretondiver.com/radiorecordings.html

Yes I've listened to these before and found some of them to be very interesting.

When is the best time to listen in to aviation traffic in the Pacific?

Theres not really any "best time" to listen as aircraft fly day and night. Although in saying this, the best time to listen I guess is when radio propagation is at it's peak as it helps SSB signal travel further.
