Re Digital Scanners
Hi I'm wanting to know which would be the best digital scanner to buy but also wanting to know if I would be able to pick up the local police in Toowoomba in Queensland as they have gone digital with encryption I believe. Is it possible to be able to decrypt or what some advice would be nice Tia

Re: Re Digital Scanners
The generic question of which is the best scanner to buy is no help to anyone. Like saying which car do I buy? More information is needed.StevoMeTalKING wrote:Hi I'm wanting to know which would be the best digital scanner to buy but also wanting to know if I would be able to pick up the local police in Toowoomba in Queensland as they have gone digital with encryption I believe. However, the best digital scanner is the one you can afford and whether it meets your anticipated needs. There are numerous digital platforms, which ones do you want? P25 Phase I, P25 Phase II, DMR, NXDN, Fusion, DStar, Alinco to mention some of the most common. Do you want a handheld or mobile/desktop? Do you want trunking? Do you want large memory capacity? Do you want to buy software to program it, or use free software? Do you want to buy one here or import one?
As to the encrypted digital - absolutely forget it, cannot and will not happen.

Unable to listen to the police in Toowoomba or SEQ, as they are digital and encrypted. You may still pick up other parts that are yet to move to the GRN or use VHF out in the rural areas

Re: Re Digital Scanners
They are running AES encryption .... 256 bit on a trunking system. As the others say it is impossible to decode.

ADP and DES are pretty much yesterdays encryption. AES on the other hand is an entirely different game. While nothing is 100 percent secure AES goes a long way to being close. I doubt (I will stand corrected on this point) there is any individual or group of individuals not associated with a government or state agency capable of breaking AES. The algorithm is just too complicated.

Re: Re Digital Scanners
You better enjoy it while it lasts
The return to analog was no doubt because of deadspots in the GWN digital coverage in your area
The Queensland Police Procedures manual (page 75) specifically instructs not to patch analog to the GWN (to improve coverage) because it will compromises the end-to-end encryption of the network
In the interim period the GWN will work behind the scenes to improve their coverage, then without warning, Toowoomba will return to the "dark side"

Re: Re Digital Scanners
VKR Toowoomba covers right out to the South Australian border, which is about 1,068 km West of Toowoomba, and South to the New South Wales border. Most of this area is still analogue, using HF, UHF, or Satphones.
The western-most GWN Site is at Bloodwood Hill, near Jondaryan, about 42 km West (actually NW) of Toowoomba.
The GWN doesn't even cover Warwick, Stanthorpe, Killarney, Wallangarra, or Goondiwindi, even though they are all part of the Darling Downs District (the combined Toowoomba and Warwick Districts - since the 2013 re-structure).
Perhaps it is the non-GWN areas that are been uploaded to the scanner apps.
Callsigns likely to be heard are:
Delta Alpha - Dalby area,
Delta Bravo - South Burnett (Dalby Burnett) area,
Charlie Victor - Charleville area,
Romeo Oscar - Roma area,
Whiskey Kilo - Warwick area,
and
Tango Whiskey - if it really is Toowoomba being heard.

Re: Re Digital Scanners
Toowoomba is digital encrypted afaik. I am still able to pick up transmissions as stated above which covers all the areas from Warwick to Charleville. I have been keeping an eye on the local police here waiting for them to get digital antennas on the roof of their cars, so I know when they will change to the dark side.... Haven't seen anything as of yet.
