Hello Everyone,

I would like to ask everyone if there are any categories that you would like to see added to Aussie Scanners. Of course it has to be related to radio communications and scanning.

So please feel free to submit your ideas and questions.

Regards,

Hi there,

Is there much communication going on in the likes of the Australian rail roads? I believe that most of the trains in this area have some sort of GPS tracking and mobile phone communications, therefore there is not much to scan. If there was in other parts of the country, could I possibly suggest a railroad category.

Might be time to add 'Whistler' to Vendor Specific Discussion section...

First of all we have railways in this country!

I know several companies have adopted the name railroad but it is a misnomer. Most of the radio communications related to railways is or soon will be digital. In the main cities passenger operations are migrating to 1800 MHz GSM-R communications. Mobile phones in other words so no go here. Freight is using ICE which is a combination of 3G and satellite. Again no go.

Queensland is adopting DMR Tier III, so unless you have a DMR capable scanner, you won't hear much.

Track, station and yard communications is mainly simplex, with some low power repeaters. In NSW, DMR is making in-roads with non control communications so the same caveat as Queensland applies. That leaves the GRN which is nowhere near as busy as it use to be. Basically what I am saying is it would be a waste of time.

And it is railway station NOT train station. I through that in just because I could.

Haha sorry about that. I have heard of the ICE system before, which I know is what the freight companies use on the 'railways' in this area. Now that you mention it...

Thanks Phil. I'm not really interested myself, but I know a couple of people who would love to see this new category in use

Hi All,

I recently acquired myself an old Austar satellite dish, I have found that there is no satellite communications forum. I was just wondering whether it would be worth adding, or whether the wouldn't be very much interest in it.

Kind Regards,
Mitch Baker - VK3GLV

Unfortunately a NZ section of aussiescanners probably wont happen as NZ is not apart of australia :)

as for the AOR i will have a look through the past posts and consider the options at my disposal

I have material to post in the NZ section (if you did create one) which was sourced last November (2016) from a cruise boat. It maybe more popular than you think.

Hello there,

Very newbie and getting my first scanner soon.

Just thought that a Scanners 101 section might be useful for people like me who are technically minded but don't quite know where to ask a 'general' scanner question. Could be helped by people with knowledge adding short posts on scanner basics like "Digital vs analog" , "what all the terms mean", talk about antenna's best for each frequency application....and these are just the questions I have as a beginner!

Have looked at Radioreference.com and that is good but has a very large US lean to it and maybe something similar with an Australian bias might be a good idea.

Certainly would be helpful to me as a newbie!

Cheers Hawkeye
